Community Arts Final: 

"Mother Natures Health Insurance Plan"

I wanted to create a public work that focused on the inaccessibility of health care as well as alternative methods of healing. Its focus was to educate people to self determination over food, health and land. I took over a lot in "The Peoples Park" where there is a ton of rich history as far as land activism goes. I made a 4 dimentional plan.

1) A community Herb Garden housing medicinal herbs and plants 
2) Signage and information of the medicinal properties of the flora within the garden and how to best utilize them 
3) Tea servings with an assortment of rotating medicinal blends  
4) Seed cards with instruction to set up your own "Mother Nature's Health insurance Plan" in a new location.

The Garden was made from reclaimed materials and houses an array of medicinal tea herbs: 

Medicinal Uses

Int. = Internal  Ex. = External A = Aromatic  A.C = Allergy Caution 

1) Lemon balm: primarily used to relax the body. helps reduce fever and can be used topically for minor skin irritations. (Int/Ex) Y

2) Peppermint: A total tummy soother. Relaxes nausea, headaches and leaves your breath minty fresh!  (Int) Y

3) Parsley: Treats congestion, urinary problems, infection and hair loss (Int) N

4)Oregano: A powerful anti- inflammatory and anti-fungal. Helps treat parasites, flu symptoms and tooth aches (Int) N

5) Thyme: Anti-ceptic that is exceptional for helping treat dry coughs, bronchitis and asthma (Int) Y

6) Sage: A strong antioxidant that purifies cells. Helps relieve stress, anxiety and depression. Has anti-septic properties when used topically (Int/Ex) N

7) Mug wort:  Is though to be effective in treating a wide range of parasitic infections. Relives stomach pain and gastric upset. Promotes sleep. (Int/A.C) Y

8) Chamomile: Mother natures stress reliever. Soothes migraine headaches and mouth sores. Soothes skin on a cold compress. (Int/Ex) Y

9) Fennel: Great for digestion and helps expel excess gas. (Int/Do not take if on birth control) Y

10) Rosemary: This herb can restore energy and circulation throughout the body. Great for your skin. It is said to prevent baldness. (Int/Ex) Y

11) Aloe: Helps speed the healing of blisters, insect bites, rashes, sores, sunburn, dry skin, allergic reactions and sties (Int/Ex) Y

12) Lavender: An aromatic stress reliever. Useful in easing tension headaches and digestive upsets (A) Y

13) Dandelion: Helps remove excess water from the body. Helps the liver detoxify and aids digestion. Assists in relieving constipation. (Int) N

*Update: The garden is over flowing with herbs and the locals have even added some new ones to the mix :)
